Bielefelder Kennhuhn, the gentle giant of the chicken world, was developed in the 1970s in the area of Bielefeld, Germany by Gerd Roth.  This breed is a dual-purpose bird, fast growing with a large meaty carcass, roosters can weigh 10 to 12 pounds.  Hens can lay up to 200 large brown eggs per year.  Despite their large size the Bielefelder is a very gentle, non-aggressive bird.  Another great attribute of the Bielefelder is the fact that the chicks can be easily auto sexed at hatch.

Their color pattern is crele or cuckoo red partridge.  They're listed as a cold hearty breed and should produce eggs even in cold temperatures.  This is our first year with the breed, so time will tell.

So far, I'm totally impressed with this big, beautiful bird and their docile disposition.  I recently combined some older hens with younger pullets, which is usually not a good idea, however it worked out marvelously.  No pecking and no bullying.  I have 2 roosters in my breeding pen, and they live in harmony.
